Budget airlines · Fuel · What changed quietly

Same ticket.Smaller airline.

A budget airline sells you a cheap seat. When its costs jump, what changes without anyone saying so? We checked.

vizmaya desk · 12 October 2026

01 · Why now

What happened in the last 90 days?

Three budget airlines, in three countries, showed the same strain. In each case something got tighter, and none of them announced it loudly.

9 Oct 2026

easyJet removed more winter flights.

Another round of cuts, on top of an earlier one. The British airline linked it to fuel costs.

23 Sep 2026

SpiceJet carried even fewer passengers.

India's aviation regulator, the DGCA, published August figures. Fewer people flew overall, and SpiceJet lost share.

Early Aug 2026

Wizz Air flew 25% more seats for 1% more money.

The Hungarian airline's ticket income barely moved, even though it offered far more seats.

So we asked one question: when costs jump, what is quietly swapped out?

02 · The whole picture

What is the whole story, in one picture?

Pressure pushes on a cheap airline. It has three ways to cope. Then the question is who got told. Each box is tested on the pages that follow.

03 · The basic idea

How does a cheap seat make money?

By being full. A budget airline sells each seat for very little, so it needs almost every seat sold. Ryanair filled 94 out of every 100 seats from April to June 2026. That leaves almost no room for surprises.

04 · The choice

What can an airline do when costs jump?

With margins this thin, it has three moves. We tested each one against results published since July.

MOVE ONE

Charge more for extras

Bags, picking your seat, a snack. Small prices, paid by almost everyone.

MOVE TWO

Charge more for the seat

Raise the fare itself. Simple, but risky if the next airline stays cheap.

MOVE THREE

Fly less

Take out weak flights and park planes. Costs fall, and few people notice.

05 · What jumped

Which cost jumped?

Fuel. Planes burn a lot of it, and it is one of the biggest bills. After the Middle East conflict began in February 2026, a US gallon of jet fuel went from $2.12 to $4.07 in eight weeks. That is nearly double.

06 · The cushion

Can an airline hide from a fuel jump?

A little. Airlines can agree a price months ahead. Ryanair agreed $670 a tonne for 80% of this financial year's fuel. On 15 July 2026 the market price was $1,265. The other 20% is not locked in.

THE STRIPED GAP IS $595 A TONNE

Even with this cushion, press reports say Ryanair and easyJet are both trimming winter flights.

07 · Move one, tested

Did airlines charge more for extras? No.

Per passenger, what Ryanair and Frontier earned from bags, seats and snacks stayed flat. At Wizz Air it fell, by our estimate. Squeezing passengers harder on extras was not the answer.

08 · Move two, tested

Did airlines charge more for the seat? Only where a rival vanished.

Ryanair and Wizz Air sold seats for less. Frontier, in the United States, charged 54% more per passenger. Its rival Spirit Airlines has shut down, so it could.

09 · Move three, tested

Did airlines fly less? Yes, quietly.

easyJet took about 1.4m seats out of its winter plan, in two rounds of around 700,000. On a usual winter of about 50 million seats, that is 2.8%. The timetable still looks full. Its chief executive linked the cuts to fuel costs.

Sources: Majorca Daily Bulletin, 9 Oct 2026; LADbible, 10 Oct 2026; Simple Flying, 9 Oct 2026. Some outlets give each round as 600,000 to 700,000. The 50 million base and the 2.8% are our arithmetic from press figures.

10 · The quiet part

When flights were taken out, who was told?

Passengers partly, investors in outline, and for regulators we found nothing.

Passengers

Partly

easyJet says it plans changes well ahead, mostly on routes with several flights a day. It has not published the full list of routes.

Investors

In outline

The chief executive gave the seat number and the reason to the Financial Times, as reported. We found no company filing.

Regulators

Nothing found

We found no regulator notice. A base closure at Leeds Bradford after 5 Jan 2027 is reported.

Sources: TravelMole, 10 Oct 2026; Travelwiseway, 11 Oct 2026; LADbible, 10 Oct 2026. These are press reports. We could not open easyJet's own statement.

11 · Who is next

Who runs out of room first?

An airline with higher costs has less room before it must cut. Before fuel, Ryanair spends far less per passenger than its rivals. That is Ryanair's own comparison, so read it as its claim. It suggests the others feel a fuel jump sooner.

12 · The planes

Does flying less also show up in the planes?

Yes. Fewer flights means fewer jets in use, either handed back or stuck on the ground.

Frontier

24 leased jets handed back in Q2 2026. Net fall of 18.

Wizz Air

13 · Another market

What does this look like in India?

One airline is fading from view. In August, SpiceJet's share of domestic passengers fell, and the whole market shrank 6.34% on the year.

14 · The scoreboard

Who did what when costs jumped?

Every finding on one page. A blank means we found no sourced number, not that nothing happened.

When fuel jumped, budget airlines held the sticker and shrank the product.

15 · Honest gaps

What could we not prove?

Cost per seat kilometre, how full planes were, and grounded jets over time each had fewer than eight sourced numbers, so we did not chart them. We found no regulator notice about easyJet's cut. The easyJet figures are press reports, not a company filing. Jet fuel prices after 17 April 2026 were out of reach.

16 · What next

Watch whether easyJet and Ryanair name the winter routes they cut when they report in November (dates not confirmed).
