One AI lab hires far fewer juniors. The wider job data has not caught up yet.

The first job is where a career starts. Here is what the numbers say about it, and what they do not.

Four numbers, pointing in different directions

9%

Junior share of Anthropic's new technical hires. It was 27% in early 2025.

5.6%

Unemployment for recent college graduates. It was 3.6% in March 2019.

8.0%

Unemployment for ages 20 to 24. It was 9.2% a year earlier.

Idea

An entry-level job is a trade: simple work now, learning in return

A company pays a new worker to do the easy tasks. The worker learns how the work really goes. Both sides get something.

Reasoning, not data

Today's juniors are tomorrow's seniors

Senior workers do not appear from nowhere. Most started on the bottom rung. If a company stops hiring there, it has no one to promote later.

123 economists say AI is a slightly bigger risk for college-educated workers. Their score is 55.6, where 50 is neutral.

16 OCT

Anthropic publishes its own hiring records. Juniors are a much smaller share of new technical hires.

20 OCT

A hiring-services firm, AMS, says 81% of employers plan to hire more early-career staff over two years.

Fact, one company

At Anthropic, juniors went from 27% to 9% of new technical hires

The share of juniors on its technical teams also fell, from 21% to 14%. Anthropic says it still hires, just fewer juniors.

Fact, one company

Its AI agents now work six hours for every staff hour

6to 1

An AI agent is software that does a task on its own once a person points it at the job. This is the count for August 2026.

Read with care

One company, its own records, and a fair warning

Anthropic says its finding describes what happened. It does not prove why. Staff chose when to use the tools, and many of its hiring practices cannot be copied elsewhere.

One more thing to know. The research for this story was done with Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic.

Fact

For ages 20 to 24, unemployment is 8.0%, below the 9.2% of a year ago

The national numbers show no clear break yet. September rose 0.9 points from August, so October's report on 6 November matters.

Fact

Entry-level job ads fell 7.5% in a year. Senior ads rose 14.7%

A job ad is a public notice of an open job. Indeed counts the ads. Employers are asking for more experience.

Fact

In software, 7 in 10 job ads are senior-level

Across all jobs, 46% of ads are entry-level. In software only 4.5% are. In personal care and home health it is 91.3%.

Interpretation

The choke point is one decision: open a junior seat, or not

AMS says 81% of firms plan to hire more early-career staff. Anthropic's records show juniors falling from 27% to 9% of its tech hires.

Between a plan and a hire sits one gate. A manager opens a junior seat or does not. No law, licence or supplier controls it, and protections for current staff do not help people never hired.

If managers close that seat because an agent can do the first draft, the ladder narrows with no layoff and no headline.

Job ads moved together

New York Fed economists found that ads in AI-exposed jobs began falling before ChatGPT, and junior and senior ads fell in parallel.

Remote work

The same bank's researchers estimate remote work explains 64% of the rise in young graduate unemployment. It is a rough estimate, and readers challenged it.

What we could not find, and the photo credits

  • The New York Fed's full quarterly data file, so we could not chart recent-graduate unemployment over time.
  • Any under-25 hires rate. Indeed's entry-level ad series was readable only at single dates.
  • AMS gives no survey dates. Anthropic's report, as we read it, gives no hire counts.
