Steel and aluminum · Q3 2026

Steel Dynamics says its aluminum mill hit breakeven. Its own table shows a $26.2M loss.

The company used one measure. The filing shows another. This deck explains the gap from scratch.

The setting

What is a steel company doing in aluminum?

Steel Dynamics is a big US steel maker. It built a new mill that rolls aluminum into flat sheet. Cans, cars and buildings all start as sheet like this.

The mill began shipping in 2026. Everything in this story is about its first year.

Chart 1 · The shape

Is the loss getting smaller?

FactYes. The loss went from $64.6M to $33.4M to $26.2M, one quarter at a time.

That is real progress. It is still below zero.

First principles

What does "EBITDA breakeven" actually mean?

EBITDA is profit before some costs are counted: interest, taxes, and the slow wear on machines.

A new mill has a big wear cost. So EBITDA can sit at zero while operating profit sits below it.

Concept note. We do not have Q3 aluminum wear cost from the filing yet.

The claim and the table

Can we check the claim against the filing?

Company statement

"Aluminum reached EBITDA breakeven."

From the Q3 2026 release text.

Fact

Operating loss: $26.2M.

From the Q3 segment table. The table shows no aluminum EBITDA line.

So the claim may be true. The filing just gives us nothing to test it with.

Chart 2 · Per ton

How much does each ton lose?

FactIn Q1 the mill lost $2,871 on every ton it shipped. By Q3 that was $477.

Divide the loss by the tons. The drop is steep, and the number is still negative.

Chart 3 · The stress point

Is the mill selling more?

FactIt shipped more tons in Q3 than in Q2: 55,000 vs 53,000. Sales in dollars fell, $475.7M vs $497.9M.

InterpretationEach ton sold for about 8% less on average. A change in product mix could explain part of it.

The early trouble

Why did the first months lose so much?

Company statementSteel Dynamics blamed a loss of good metal on the rolling coolant, the liquid used in the mill.

It says no more costs of this kind are expected. That promise is the company's own, and nothing in the filing tests it.

Below the segment line

What happens to interest once a mill is built?

While a plant is under construction, a company can add its interest bill to the plant's cost. Once the plant is done, that interest hits profit.

FactGroup interest expense was $39.3M in Q3, vs $13.6M a year ago. This is the whole company, not only aluminum.

Source: STLD Q3 release; Q2 10-Q (capitalized interest down $18.8M, 68%).

Outside the segment line

Is $124.2M the whole cost so far?

FactNo. In Q2 the company took a $16.5M write-down, called an impairment, that sits outside the aluminum segment line.

Add it back and the nine-month cost is at least $140.7M.

Source: STLD Q2 2026 results; $124.2M + $16.5M = $140.7M.

Timeline

What did the company promise, and when?

  1. Q1 2026Loss of $64.6M on 22,500 tons.
  2. Q2 2026Loss of $33.4M, plus a $16.5M write-down.
  3. 21 July callAluminum to be "earnings positive" in the second half.
  4. Q3 releaseLoss of $26.2M. Says "EBITDA breakeven". Does not repeat the July line.

InterpretationIf "earnings positive" means operating profit, Q4 must earn more than $26.2M to make the half positive. The company never defined the measure in what we read.

The fair counter-case

Does this loss even matter to the company?

FactNot much. Aluminum's $26.2M loss is 2.6% of the $1,006.4M the group earned from operations in Q3.

Steel earned $1,032.6M, double the $497.9M of a year ago. Steel is paying for the experiment.

Lens read · Concealment

So is this hiding?

InterpretationNo. Steel Dynamics filed the loss, the tons and a named cause. That is more than most firms do.

But "breakeven" sits on a measure the filing never shows. A reader sees a word that sounds like zero next to a table that says minus $26.2M.

That is selective framing. The real test is Q4, when the company has to say which number it means.

What to watch next

What will settle this?

  • The Q3 10-Q, not filed when we checked. It may show aluminum wear cost and an EBITDA reconciliation.
  • The Q4 aluminum segment line. Does it clear +$26.2M?
  • The 20 October call transcript, which we have not read yet.
  • Whether "no ongoing additional costs" from the coolant problem holds.
